Top 6 White-Label Organic Skin Care Manufacturers

Humans have been using cosmetics, taking care of their skin for thousands of years. However, for the most of human history, cosmetics were prepared by the users. Furthermore, secrets of cosmetics were passed within the families.

With the advent of the industrial age, everything changed. Now the cosmetics industry is one of the largest industries. Moreover, it is a booming industry.

The European cosmetics and personal care market is the largest market globally. It is estimated to have an annual turnover of close to 80 billion Euros at retail price. In addition, it provides jobs to about 2 million individuals directly or indirectly.

Some of the largest cosmetics markets in Europe are Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Spain, and Poland.

As a single economic zone, the EU is a particularly attractive market with many opportunities. It is relatively easy to start a cosmetics business if a person is based in the EU. It means no duties and minimal regulatory or legal hurdles to start a business. Furthermore, no boundaries within the zone mean that one can focus on all the markets, and opportunities are limitless.

Cosmetics and personal care include thousands of products. It is estimated that about 50% of the industry’s turnover comes from skin care. Thus, it is the most attractive segment. It may include body lotions, sunscreen, scrubs, moisturizers, and even creams for special skin conditions.

White labelling or private labelling can help anyone get started with the cosmetics business on quite a small budget. There is no need to start manufacturing or even think about products formulations. White label manufacturers provide hundreds of products for every need. As the name says, they are white labelled, waiting to be labelled as per the client’s requirements.

Business models have changed a lot in the last few decades. Many cosmetics manufacturer do not sell their brands. They rather provide manufacturing services to others.

Qualities of a good white-label organic skincare manufacturer

When looking for White label skin care products, it is essential to understand that all the manufacturers broadly fall into two categories. Those who focus on larger clients or companies, and others who focus more on small businesses and even individuals.

Those focusing on larger companies would have high-quality products. Their products and services are also relatively cheaper. However, they would often have a larger batch size. For example, they may supply nothing less than 5000 units of moisturizing cream. Additionally, they may also frequently make products according to clients’ requirements.

However, the second category is perhaps more interesting for new businesses. These are the companies focusing on smaller or even individual clients. Their services may be relatively more expensive, but they are ready to process small orders. Moreover, they may have an excellent range of products ready to be labelled as per the client’s requirements.

Below are some of the qualities to consider in white label organic skincare manufacturers:

Number of products in the portfolio

Most people starting the business would prefer that the manufacturer provide the list of organic skin care products. So that one can choose the products to order according to their business model or strategy. Good organic skin care manufacturers would have at least tens of products to choose from.

In most cases, these products have already been produced and are in stock. They are just waiting to be labelled and dispatched to the client immediately.

Quality of products

Quality is another vital factor. Of course, everyone would claim their quality is the best, but good white label organic skin care manufacturers would support their claims with various certificates. Moreover, it is worth understanding that many of these certificates would be needed for selling the products.

Other certifications

Other certifications mean something that can add value to the product like it does not contain GMO or is “Organic”. It is worth understanding that no official or governmental organization provides “Organic” certification in the EU or other nations. Instead, the private labs or organizations give most such certificates.

Nevertheless, the law in most countries, including EU nations, mandates that all claims must be evidence-based. Thus, a certificate from a reputed lab would work.

Additionally, it is worth understanding that there is nothing like 100% organic. Any product is called organic if more than 90% of ingredients are organic. The same is true of the term natural. Additionally, some may use terms like “made with organic”, which generally indicates that organic ingredients are less than acceptable level.

Minimum batch size requirements

Most starters are tight on the budget. Thus, it would be good to understand the minimum number of any product that the manufacturer is ready to label and sell. However, small numbers are not essentially better. A larger batch size would mean a lower cost. Thus, one would still need to weigh the things.

Quality of services

It does not matter how good is the manufacturer. If they cannot understand the client’s requirements, it is not worth working with them. Thus, the quality-of-service matter. Some of the white label skin care manufacturers would even provide a dedicated manager to each client.

Organic Skincare product manufacturing process

Learning about organic skincare manufacturing may help a bit. The most manufacturer would outsource their ingredients. It makes logic, as so many ingredients are needed, and one cannot produce all of them. However, some may specialize in only a specific kind of products any might produce their ingredients. Like some may have in-house CBD extraction. Others may own Aloe Vera farms, and so on.

Generally, organic or natural ingredients are processed before use by the industry. In many cases, only extracts are used like CBD

Next, the ingredients are tested for quality. This is followed by the mixing of various ingredients. The next step is packing the products. Then, the final certification of the product follows it. Finally, the white label product is ready, waiting for its client.

Who in Europe can supply you with top white-label organic skincare products

Finding a white label manufacturer of skincare and cosmetics is more challenging in Europe compared to the US or China. In Europe, most manufacturers are selling their products in their brand names. Nonetheless, some excellent white label manufacturers are there in Europe. Here are the top 5 to consider for your organic skin care range of products:

  1. Essentia Pura is a Slovenian company, founded in 2014. It’s a manufacturer and supplier of organic white label CBD cosmetic products like CBD body lotion, CBD balm and other CBD related comstic products. Essentia Pura aims for the highest possible standards in its quality control procedures, based on this,  their supply chain is regularly audited and all manufacturing and R&D are performed in a highly controlled laboratory environment and by a team experienced in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries.
  2. MS beautilab (Swiss, France, Czech) – It is one of the largest white label manufacturers in Europe. The company has colossal research and manufacturing in three nations. MS Beautilab provides most of its products as France or Swiss made. They even have a range of natural pigments for use in cosmetics, and also use many patented technologies. Needless to say, that quality comes at a price.
  3. Badgequo (UK)- Skincare manufacturers in the UK differ because they may provide smaller batch sizes. They also have excellent services. In addition, they provide a range of organic and inorganic cosmetics.
  4. Fancystage (Portugal) – it is a leading manufacturer of Portugal, with a massive production area. They can provide every conceivable cosmetic or personal care product. Thus, they have almost everything for skin care, hair, bath and body, oral care, and much more.
  5. HSA cosmetics (Italy) – they mainly focus on skin care and natural ingredients. Thus, they have an excellent range for skin care and hair range.
  6. Bomo-trendline (Germany) primarily focuses on private labelling or white labelling, providing a massive range of products for every need from skin care, hair and nail to decorative cosmetics.

Working with white-label organic skincare manufacturers

Starting working with white label skin care manufacturers may be a bit tricky. Most of these companies have tremendous experience in handling clients. On the other side, a person starting a business may have limited understanding.

Thus, start with agreements like a non-disclosure agreement, protection of intellectual property rights.

Once the agreements are in place, discuss the GMP and how they can meet regulatory needs for any particular market. Also, ask them to provide information about how their ingredients are sourced.

Once everything has been agreed, send the manufacturer the final brief with all the details. Next, ask them to provide benchmark samples.

If everything goes as planned, agree on the batch size, shipment methods, delivery timelines. Also, ensure that product has a bar code. Discuss what certifications will the manufacturer send with each shipment. Also, learn more about how they test their final products.

It does not matter how well the parties work; some issues will always arise. To err is human. Thus, there must be a contingency plan. Everything should be clear, like how the complaints would be dealt with, how the goods can be returned, who will bear the costs in such cases, and so on.

Although white label provides an opportunity to get started at small budgets, the lack of in-house manufacturing has its downsides. Thus, one should pay utmost attention to the quality of the products and their certifications.

It is vital to remember that certifications are not just for commercial purposes. Sometimes, they may even save a business from legal issues arising from unforeseen quality issues with cosmetics.

What to know about importing CBD into Japan?

Japan is the third-largest economy in the world. It also means that it is one of the largest markets for healthcare products. Moreover, East Asian nations like Japan are well known to prefer natural remedies for health benefits.

Japan opened up its CBD market for global players in 2013. However, quite like other nations, since then, lots have changed.

During the initial days of the legalization of CBD, Japan allowed imports of CBD oils containing THC below 0.3%. However, some elements started exploiting this law and started importing high THC or liquid marijuana products. This forced the Japanese government to make significant changes in the law. As a result, Japan finally outlawed imports of any amounts of THC.

Overview of Japanese CBD Regulations and Laws

It is illegal to import THC-containing products in Japan. The product should be free from even minutes amounts of it (although THC in traces might be permissible).

In Japan, cannabis is any product that has THC, even in minute amounts. Thus, importing THC products is penalized under the Cannabis Control Act (CCA) and the Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act (NPCA). THC-containing products can be imported only for research purposes or medicinal purposes with prior permission.

It is extremely vital to understand that in Japan, even CBD extracted from leaves or flowers is regarded as cannabis, and thus its import is illegal.

As per Japanese law, only CBD extracted from hemp’s stalk or seed is legal. Thus, any importer would need to prove that the product they are planning to import was specifically extracted from these parts of the plant. It means that the import of THC-free CBD oil extracted from leaves or flowers is prohibited and categorized as cannabis.

Criteria & Policies for Importing CBD into Japan

Before importing any CBD product into Japan, one would need to apply for import permission from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW)’s Department of Drug Control.

MHLW would ask for numerous documents:

  • Provide certificate mentioning all the ingredients in the product
  • Declaration stating that CBD was extracted from hemp stalk or hemp seeds
  • Certificate of analysis confirming the concentration of CBD and THC (if in traces). It should also mention all the additives in the product.
  • Detailed dossier providing information of the production process
  • Photographs of the manufacturing showing that hemp stalk and seeds were used to extract CBD.

Since getting MHLW import permission is a complex task, hiring a local consultant or law firm is generally a good idea.

Start your brand with CBD products that are market-proven and ready to sell immediately. Reach out, and let’s discuss the opportunities.

White label CBD products

Importing CBD into Japan from the EU

The procedure for importing CBD into Japan from the EU would be similar to what is stated above. However, it means that one should first apply for authorization from MHLW, along with all the necessary documents.

It would be a good idea also to include a certificate confirming the origin of products. Generally, European certificates have a higher relevance. It is because many EU regulatory authorities work with Japanese regulatory authorities.

Nevertheless, it would be better to import only THC-free products from the EU. Further, it would be still essential to confirm that it was extracted from hemp stalk or seed. THC in traces may not be an issue, and that is natural. However, products containing THC in permissible levels in the EU (with 0.2%) cannot be imported into Japan. Although, MHLW may make an exception in some cases.

Usually, Japan has very low duty rates, generally below 5%. Additionally, one would need to pay VAT on imported products. In Japan, VAT is 10% of the cost of the goods.

Importing CBD into Japan from other Countries

Importing CBD into Japan from other countries would need to follow a similar procedure as mentioned above. That is getting MHLW authorization (requiring documents as stated above). If the authorization is approved, one can import CBD into Japan.

Each batch of imported CBD must be accompanied by an invoice, certificate of analysis, and packing list. Further, in Japan, it is essential to use the metric system in documents and packing materials.

Additionally, it is a good idea to provide a certificate of origin. Japan has favourable duty rates for many developing nations. Finally, it is worth knowing that all imported CBD products would need to pay 10% VAT along with customs duties before they can be sold.

Importing CBD into Japan to Sell

As already mentioned, that importing CBD to sell in Japan is legal. However, Japanese law is quite strict, and every product is strictly checked. It is because the Japanese authorities want to ensure that CBD products should not have high THC or cannot be used for recreational purposes.

It is better to import THC-free products only into Japan. Further, one should always prove to the Japanese authorities that their product was made strictly according to their requirements.

When importing CBD consumables, one would also need clearance from local Quarantine Stations (as required by Food Sanitation Act). Quarantine Stations need to be sure that the product is free from microbiological hazards, other biological hazards, and so on.

Importing Hemp into Japan

Importing hemp oil would need to follow the same procedure as stated above. Since hemp oil is extracted from seeds, one would still need to prove that no other parts of hemp were used during the extraction (although plant stalk extract is also allowed).

When importing hemp seeds, one must provide a certificate that seeds were treated to ensure that they cannot germinate. Generally, treating hemp seeds at 90 degrees Celsius for an hour or a bit more is enough.

As per Japanese laws, the import of hemp seeds for cultivation is illegal. Nonetheless, MHLW-authorized hemp cultivators can import hemp seeds, but not others.

Japan allows the import of food products containing hemp like candies, gummies, and so on. Like CBD oil, one would need to prove that hemp was derived from hemp seed or stalk and ensure that it is THC-free or has THC in traces. The certificate of analysis should support the quality of the product.

It is worth knowing that Japan does not allow the import of animal or livestock feed containing hemp cake or extracts. In addition, CBD products for veterinary use cannot be imported.

Finally, it is worth knowing that Japan does not allow the export of cannabis. It means that if any shipment fails certification in Japan and is classified as cannabis (due to high THC or due to use of leave or flower extract), then it will be destroyed. Re-export of rejected products or shipping back to the country of origin is not possible.

To sum up, Japan is among the nations that do not differentiate between “hemp” & “marijuana.” This is vital to understand that Japanese laws say both are “cannabis plants.”1

Japan allows importing seeds, seeds products, or products made from mature hemp stalks as industrial products. Hemp seed oil is naturally CBD-free, and the mature stalk is a fiber source. Products made from other parts of the cannabis plant cannot be imported into the country.1

There is a zero-tolerance policy in the nation for THC. This means that any hemp product imported into the nation must not contain THC in any amounts, which may result in legal issues.

Hence, at present, importing CBD oil for oral use is challenging. However, CBD-based cosmetics, with zero THC and for topical use, are imported and sold in the nation.2

Due to very strict policies, one should always get prior permission from prior confirmation from the Drug Control Department (commonly known as “Matori”) before importing any CBD product into the nation.3Despite so many limitations, Japan is still to market to watch for. In 2022, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW) established a Cannabis Control Review Subcommittee, which intends to introduce new regulations regarding the legality of CBD in the coming years. It means that the Japanese market is expected to open up for various CBD products in the next few years.2

Top 6 White-Label Cosmetics Manufacturers in Europe

Ever wanted to launch your brand of cosmetics? Well, it has never been as simple as these days. To own a cosmetic brand, one does not essentially need to make products from scratch. In fact, there is no need to manufacture a product at all. Numerous companies can provide fantastic quality products. Thus, all that one needs to do is think about branding and place an order.

Manufacturing and branding/selling are two very different things. Even some of the major global brands do not produce their products. People are more likely to associate themselves with certain brands, trust them, like them, and be loyal to them. However, consumers would rarely like to know who is producing the products.

Moreover, not manufacturing the product have some benefits, too. It means that various organizations can specialize in certain areas. For example, some organizations or individuals can specialize in just marketing and creating brands. On the other hand, manufacturers can focus on creating good products.

Large cosmetic producers would often get their products contract manufactured. Since their orders are large, they would provide all the details about product specification, ingredients, packaging, etc.

White-label cosmetics manufacturers differ

They already have a range of ready-made products. They typically focus on small businesses. Therefore, those looking to start their business do not need to think about a product. White-label manufacturers would provide a catalog of their products. They will give samples, provide certificates, and other details. What they primarily do is put the logo or label of the client on the product.

These days the best way to find white-label cosmetics is through the internet. However, one may also find them through other channels like trade shows. Although finding white-label cosmetics is not an issue, but choosing the right one may be challenging.

Furthermore, it means that such a manufacturer should have an excellent range of products to choose from. Further, one should also check the reviews about the company. Below are some of the vital features and qualities to look for in a white-label cosmetics manufacturer.

Certifications or quality standards

Cosmetics are not registered with regulatory authorities like medications. Nevertheless, things are not as simple. Although regulatory authorities in most countries do not control or check cosmetic products. Still, they do keep an eye on production units and safety data of cosmetic products.

Thus, a facility producing cosmetics would be inspected by the US FDA to ensure that manufacturers are following the highest of standards in the US. Additionally, in the US, there is also a voluntary cosmetics registration.

Similarly, in the EU, one does not need to get some license or approval from the European commission for selling cosmetics. However, European regulation EC 1223/2009 requires that the cosmetics manufacturer must follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). This helps minimize the risk of poor-quality products making their way into the market.

Moreover, suppose someone is planning to sell cosmetics in the EU. In that case, it is obligatory to file an online notification at the cosmetic products notification portal (CPNP). Although it is free of cost procedure, it will require many documents regarding how the product was produced.

Thus, it is always good to know about additional requirements in any specific country regarding cosmetics products and ask white-label manufacturers about those documents.

If ordering products overseas (outside the US or EU), then make sure that the production facility is certified by the local authorities.

Also, check that the product you are planning to buy or launch in any specific country does not contain any banned or restricted ingredients. For example, the European Commission maintains a database called CosIng, where one can learn more about ingredients. Understand if any ingredient is safe or banned for use in cosmetics products.

Specialty certificates

Specific brands may help make your brand stand out. Thus, always ask white-cosmetics manufacturers about such certificates, such as the certificate that the product is organic, natural, vegan, etc.

Natural cosmetics manufacturing process

Natural beauty products manufacturers generally follow some processes. First, they only use raw materials having natural origins like minerals and plants. In rare cases, some may also use ingredients of animal origin.

The manufacturing process would generally start with the procurement of raw materials. The next step would be checking the raw quality materials. This would be followed by the mixing and filling processes resulting in the semi-finished or finished products.

What to know about importing CBD into the UK?

Imported anything for commercial sales would require some bare minimum documentation. If any product is imported in large amounts, a legal entity must be registered in the country. But that is not all. When it comes to food items, natural products, there are many other restrictions and requirements.

For example, most nations would have some requirements regarding packaging. In the case of food products, one may need to provide a certificate that it does not pose a biological hazard to the nation and is free from contaminations like invasive insects, weeds, etc. When it comes to CBD, things are a bit more complicated.

Overview of UK CBD Regulations and Laws

When it comes to CBD regulations, it is complex. It is because there are so many different products, and rules for each would differ. To begin with, one has to show that THC is below 0.2% in the products. This should be proven by the certificate of analysis or certificate of quality control.

If the THC is below the permissible limits, it means that the product would qualify as a novel food in the UK, but not as a food or food supplement. In addition, it means that there is a need for its pre-marketing approval. Such approval is given by FSA (Food Standards Agency) in the UK.

Getting FSA approval and certifying that the product is novel food is a long and tedious task. It requires the preparation of a dossier about the product quality and safety. It generally means hiring a regulatory agency, consultants, collecting a certain amount of health-related data.

However, there is some good news. Unlike EFSA in the EU, FSA in the UK is giving novel food approvals or marketing authorizations for CBD products. So, the procedure might be tedious, but it is working. Moreover, it is likely that one may get a temporary import permit by submitting the application. However, it is always good to use the services of some consulting agencies for such complex tasks.1

It is worth knowing that CBD flowers cannot get FSA approval. They are still under the Misuse of Drugs Act, irrespective of their THC content. So, the answer to the question, can I import CBD flowers is, No.

Cannabinoids and the UK

However, there is a way out from FSA novel food approval. Legally, CBD and Hemp are two different things. Since the UK and EU have a history of consuming Cannabis sativa seeds, seed oil, defatted hemp seed, and hemp seed flour, they are not regarded as a novel food. However, it is worth understanding that hemp seed oil is CBD free naturally.

Getting import approval for high THC would be pretty complex, as that would require opening an NDS account and getting a license to import the products. High THC products are covered by Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001.

But that is not all. If the intention is to promote CBD products as a medicine, then the procedure is altogether different. Then one would need to get regulatory approval or license from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory agency.

Finally, before importing any product, it is essential to understand if it has to be certified by local labs or not. In most cases, a manufacturers certificate of analysis may not suffice. It is not complex, but it would add to the costs and prolong getting customs clearance. Further, even if the goods are cleared from customs, various retailers often demand a third-party certificate of analysis.

Requirements for Importing CBD into the UK

As one can see, things are not that simple. Requirements would depend on what kind of product a person is planning to import. Here we look at the two most common products that one would perhaps like to import: CBD oil or Hemp oil. Other things like CBD flower, high THC products, cannabis-based medicines are altogether a different story.

In the case of Hemp oil, things are pretty simple. FSA statement clearly says that hemp and related products like cold-pressed oils are not novel food. It is because there is a long history of their consumption in the UK.

However, it does not mean that there won’t be any requirement for documentation. To begin with, one would need to prove that the product is a hemp oil or related product. Thus, it would still need a certificate of analysis. One may also require documentation or certificates regarding additives in hemp oil. Further, customs may ask for local chemical analysis and microbiological examination.

You can learn more about importing various items, including CBD products, by visiting the UK Gov website or consulting customs agents.2,3

Additionally, there would be specific requirements for labelling. For example, it should not contain any misleading information or health claims.

Although, the procedure is pretty simple for hemp oil. But importing legal entities may still need import licenses for food products. It is because hemp oil is not a novel food or medication, but it remains a food product.

CBD oil import

would be more complex and require a greater number of documentations. Be clear that customs would never clear a shipment of CBD oil without authorization from FSA regarding novel food. However, FSA authorization does not provide relief from other certifications. Every batch of the product would still need to have a certificate of analysis. Further, one would need to arrange for a local chemical and microbiological analysis report.

The two bare documents needed for novel food are FSA authorization and certificates of analysis (both by the manufacturer and local third-party lab in the UK). When getting a certificate from third-party labs, make sure that they have all the necessary credentials.

As already written earlier, CBD medicines and high THC products have a very different and complex procedure. Those require licenses from various regulatory agencies and high investments.

Importing CBD into the UK from EU countries

If you plan to import CBD oil or hemp oil from the EU zone, it is pretty simple, and documentations are minimal. Of course, one would still need some documentation mentioned above like a certificate of analysis and approval regarding novel food. However, things are simpler in the way that the UK recognizes most of the certificates given by the agencies in the EU.

It means that novel food approval from European agencies would be valid in the UK. So would the certificate of analysis by a third-party lab located in the EU zone and having proper credentials.

In many cases, it might mean minimal documentation. For example, one may attach all the local EU documents, approvals, certificates. However, one would also need to declare the value of the products. Thus, one should not forget to send an invoice with any shipment.

Imports from EU member states are free from customs duty in the UK. However, they are not free from VAT. Thus, one would need to pay the VAT before freely selling the products in the UK.

Importing CBD into the UK from other Countries

Importing from outside of the EU is a bit more complicated as a lot more documents are needed. The importer should have an Economic Operators Registration and Identification number (EORI number).

Since all goods coming from outside the EU have to pay customs duty, the invoice should mention the commodity codes. But, of course, one must mention the correct commodity code, else it would create trouble.

It is essential to note that one should have all the necessary licenses and approvals like that from FSA for novel foods like CBD oil. Although no such approvals are needed for hemp oil, a certificate proving its purity and safety would still be required.

The next step would be paying the local customs duty and VAT. For those planning to import CBD goods regularly into the UK, it is good to open a duty deferment account.

To pay the duties, one would need to fill import declaration. One needs to submit this import declaration along with all the supporting documents to customs. Some of the essential supporting documents are packing list, invoice, certificate of analysis (both local and manufacturer’s), other licenses like FSA license if needed.

Freight partners are convenient

As one can understand, it could be quite a daunting task to import goods from outside the EU. Therefore, it is common practice to use brokerage firms or customs agents for fulfilling these processes. These agencies have lots of experience, and they can always ensure that things get cleared from customs on time. It is a good idea to consult customs agents much before importing such products to the UK.

Another thing worth knowing is that the UK has a free trade agreement with many nations outside the EU, like Japan and Australia. It means that importing products from such countries would be relatively simpler. Free trade agreement generally means that one does not need to pay local customs duties and just a VAT. So, the process of importing from such nations would be pretty similar to importing from the EU.

Importing CBD into the UK to Sell

It is worth understanding that everything written above is for those intending to import CBD products for commercial purposes. However, importing things for personal use is much simpler.

Importing things for personal use should be in smaller amounts only. Logically, customs would not believe that someone has imported tons of CBD for personal use. Few packs of CBD oil can be readily imported for personal use without much hassle. One would still need to understand that one may need to pay duties on some expensive items. Exemption rates for goods imported for personal use differ.

To conclude, importing CBD into the UK has its own intricacies. UK legal THC limit is at 0.2, and after that, it could be regarded as a controlled substance. CBD UK customs would ask for many documents when products are of non-EU origin. Therefore, one would need CBD import lenience in the UK. However, one can import CBD oil with proper documents. Importing hemp oil is relatively straightforward, whereas importing CBD flowers is not possible.

Since Brexit, the cards have been reshuffled and the UK CBD industry offers great opportunities. If you are ready to jump on board, complete the web form and we will get you started!

Extracting Terpenes with CO2

How would a person choose a cannabis flower? There is no doubt that most would rely on smelling the flower. The terpenes provide this wonderful smell to cannabis and even other herbs. They are highly volatile and act on the olfactory system. Although aroma itself is vital in herbal extracts, it appears that terpenes have many different roles. The Discovery of numerous health benefits of terpenes has created massive interest in these wonderful organic compounds.

There are many ways of boosting the potency of CBD products, like adding terpene extracts, extracting terpenes in-house, and then adding them to CBD products. Terpenes CBD product has a better aroma and more potent health benefits.

Any single plant would have numerous terpenes, and terpene structure varies. The combination of various terpenes creates the distinct aroma of any plant. It means that most aromatic plants and herbs have multiple types of terpenes and the unique fragrance results from a unique combination.

In addition, these terpenes help keep pests away and attract pollinators. Studies show that there are numerous terpenes in cannabis like alpha and beta-pinene, limonene, terpinolene, linalool, humulene, caryophyllene, and so on.

Higher amounts of flavonoids and terpenes provide cannabis extract with greater antioxidant properties, extending its health benefits. But, more importantly, terpenes appear to boost the health benefits of CBD through a so-called entourage effect.

Researchers are still exploring various health effects of terpenes. However, it now appears that many benefits of herbal products are due to terpenes. Terpenes may modulate immunity, inflammatory responses, boost various body functions. Thus, retaining terpenes during CBD extraction may help produce a better and aromatic product. Terpenes cannabinoids help each other work better.

CO2 as a solvent for terpene extraction

Using supercritical CO2 is one of the most common methods of CBD extraction. Supercritical CO2 is an excellent solvent. It is formed by compressing CO2 at high pressures and still maintaining a high temperature. However, this method poses some challenges in extracting terpenes. Terpenes do not like the high temperature of supercritical CO2. Terpenes are highly volatile.

It means that using supercritical CO2 alone would not help get products rich in terpenes. Although that may not be a problem when the aim is to produce pure CBD isolate. However, extracting terpenes make commercial sense as these incredible aromatic compounds are costly.

Process of Terpene Extraction

Fortunately, it is known that these terpenes dissolve well into ethanol. Therefore, one way is to introduce 5% ethanol to CO2 extraction. This can be combined with so-called decarboxylation, a process of converting acidic cannabis to a neutral form, which considerably improves the extraction of cannabinoids and terpenes. Thus, it is good to decarboxylate before making oil.

Using a small amount of ethanol is a very economical way of terpenes extraction. In addition, it does not add up much to the total extraction costs. However, ethanol is not a perfect method, as it has numerous limitations.

The end product of ethanol extraction is dark-colored biomass that is abundant in terpenes.  However, this biomass still contains ethanol along with fats, waxes, and other cellular materials. Therefore, it means that this biomass still needs further processing for extracting terpenes.

Can terpenes be destroyed during the extraction?

In short, the answer is yes. Not all, but partial degradation of terpenes occurs when ethanol is used to extract terpenes. This degradation and even loss of terpenes occur during the distillation process.

Biomass produced through ethanol extraction is not very pleasant. One still needs to use evaporators to remove ethanol and other impurities. However, this process has some problems. Terpenes are highly volatile. It means that many terpenes evaporate along with ethanol, resulting in considerable loss.

But that it’s not all. Applying heat also degrades many terpenes. Nonetheless, after evaporation, dark-colored oil rich in terpenes is left behind. These remaining oils must be further processed to get pure and safe to consume terpenes.

So, as one can see that although ethanol is an excellent way of terpenes extraction, like any method, it has its downsides. Prolonged application of heat during evaporation degrades terpenes. Due to a similar boiling point, many terpenes are lost during the evaporation process.

It means that although ethanol is quite a cost-effective way, it is far from perfect. Fortunately, there are better ways of terpenes extraction or retention: using sub-critical CO2 run before using supercritical CO2 to extract cannabinoids. Many types of equipment, including MoSES, allow the use of sub-critical CO2 extraction methods.

Preserving and maximizing terpenes

Sub-critical CO2 extraction is very similar to supercritical. However, it applies less pressure and uses lower temperatures. As a result, it is especially effective in preserving highly volatile compounds found in various herbs like terpenes in cannabis.

It yields a product that is rich in terpenes and various cannabinoids. However, it generally produces less yield than supercritical CO2 extraction and is also a slower process.

One can run the remaining plant biomass through an additional cycle of supercritical extraction to extract a greater number of cannabinoids. Supercritical extraction is also better in retaining denser molecules like fatty acids.

Thus, as one can see that there is no ideal way of extracting various phytocompounds. Each phytocompound differs in physical properties. Some are better extracted using liquid solvents like ethanol, others supercritical CO2.

Due to an increased understanding of various health benefits associated with terpenes and the importance of the entourage effect, many are using sub-critical extraction these days.

Fortunately, one can use the same equipment to carry out all these processes in automatic or semi-automatic mode. Most supercritical CO2 extraction equipment would allow the use of sub-critical CO2 extraction. Moreover, many such types of equipment also allow adding ethanol.

The truth is that no method is perfect. However, combining multiple ways of extraction, running the cannabis mass through multiple cycles is the only way to extract a maximum number of compounds. Further, lots would also depend on post-processing. Thus, the final product produced by any machine also depends on the knowledge base of any organization, its experience in producing herbal extracts.

Essentia Pura terpene-rich extracts, a state of art!

Essentia Pura is the manufacturer of CBD and terpenes extraction equipment like the MoSES and CBD isolate or distillate. It also produces water-soluble CBD products with excellent bioavailability.

Hydrocarbon vs CO2 – Which is the best extraction method

Since the legalization of CBD, the market has been booming. There are many small- and large-scale manufacturers in the market. Most CBD producers may start making products by procuring CBD isolate or distillate. However, as their business expands, many would like to begin in-house CBD extraction.

The three most commonly used methods for CBD extraction are using ethanol, hydrocarbons, or CO2. Each of these methods has its pros and cons. Among these, hydrocarbons and CO2 are gases, whereas ethanol is a liquid. Gases are generally compressed to create a supercritical mass. It is a condition when gas is somewhere between the liquid and a gaseous state. In this state, it has very low surface tension and is an excellent solvent. Thus, this supercritical mass can readily penetrate cannabis cells and extract various compounds.

Comparing Hydrocarbon Extraction against CO2 Extraction

Handling gases is a complex art and science. Most organizations would buy a closed-loop machine produced by well-known companies. These machines either use hydrocarbons or CO2. Additionally, some equipment would allow the use of ethanol along with supercritical gases.

The major difference between hydrocarbons and CO2 is that hydrocarbons are highly flammable or even explosive. It means that there are strict regulatory needs for operating equipment using hydrocarbon extraction methods. On the other hand, CO2 is much safer.

When it comes to the quality of the end product, it does depend on the solvents, but not only. It also depends on the expertise of the organization. For example, by altering the pressure, temperature and using liquid solvents like ethanol, one may get different products. Moreover, lots would also depend on post-processing.

What is Hydrocarbon Extraction

It is a method that uses either propane or butane as a solvent. These gases are cheaply available, as they have many industrial uses. In addition, as a supercritical mass, they form an excellent solvent, helping extract a broad range of phytocompounds from cannabis.

Volatile gases like Butane and Propane are highly flammable, which can lead to dangerous explosions.

Many often loved them due to their low-cost and excellent ability to extract broad-spectrum cannabis extract. However, there are some issues in using these gases. They are highly flammable and explosive. It means that every country has some stringent regulations regarding its industrial use. It will include training of the personnel, specific requirements for the infrastructure. The use of hydrocarbon machines would generally require building a special room in many countries that is explosion-proof and has a specific type of ventilation.

Although, running the hydrocarbon machines is not expensive. However, due to other costs like those in personnel and infrastructure, it may ultimately become a costly business. Further, costs are also involved in various inspections, getting licenses, regulatory approvals.

Other hydrocarbon extraction side effects could be a greater number of impurities in the end product.

What is CO2 Extraction

As the name says, it uses CO2 instead of flammable hydrocarbons. Therefore, it is among the safest gasses to handle. Not only that, CO2 is non-toxic for the human body in small amounts. This means that even if some leakage occurs, it would not be that dangerous. Carbon dioxide may only cause suffocation at very high concentrations, but that is rare.

It is pretty commonly used for CBD extraction. It is often the method of choice for companies starting with extraction. However, it produces a very crude extract that requires further processing through winterization, filtration, etc., which may ultimately add up to the costs.

Since CO2 is safe for human consumption, it is widely used in the food and beverage industry.

CO2 is good for extracting CBD but not that good for other cannabinoids and terpenes. However, that limitation can be overcome. For example, some machines may run the same extract through multiple cycles to extract various phytocompounds. Further, adding ethanol to these machines may help extract terpenes. However, this does slow down the extraction process.

What is the Difference between BHO and CO2 extraction

Butane hash oil (BHO) uses butane for extraction, whereas CO2 uses carbon dioxide. These are both gases, and they are compressed to create supercritical mass. In the supercritical stage, these are excellent solvents. Generally, butane is regarded as a slightly superior solvent due to its ability to penetrate natural extracts better. However, it has its downside, as it is a highly combustible gas.

Many in the industry prefer BHO over CO2 due to the lower costs of such a method. Using butane is also a faster way of extraction. The extraction cycle with CO2 is longer, which may considerably add up to the costs.

It is worth noticing that in most closed-loop machines, most of these gases are recycled. Nonetheless, about 5% of gases do escape during each cycle. Butane is harmful to the environment compared to CO2.

Hydrocarbon vs CO2: Which Provides the Best Product

It would be pretty complex to say which methods produce the best product. Each of these ways produces a different kind of product. Hydrocarbons generally produce a superior product because it contains the most vital phytocompounds, like various cannabinoids, terpenes, and much more. Further, products created using hydrocarbons require less post-processing, making it an efficient method for industrial use.

Extracting in separated fractions – the beauty of CO2

Extracting with CO2, on the other hand, requires greater post-processing. Therefore, it is more challenging to get broad-spectrum extract with CO2. However, it is possible with the right kind of expertise and equipment. Moreover, using ethanol along with CO2 is a common practice to get the broad-spectrum extract.

It is true that hydrocarbons may readily produce a better end product. However, those are also more likely to introduce toxic impurities. Further, some residual solvents may also remain in the product. Hydrocarbons are harmful to the human body, even in traces. Thus, if in CO2 extract, extensive post-processing is needed to get pure product. In the case of hydrocarbons, the challenge remains in removing the traces of solvents.

It would be correct to say that both these methods may produce an excellent product. However, it would lot depend on the expertise of the organization.

What to know about importing CBD into France?

Among the EU nations, France has the patchiest history when it comes to legalizing CBD products. There have been lots of ups and downs. The country has been most resistant to legalizing CBD. Even worse, it has a history of creating troubles for CBD importers and retailers. However, fortunately, all that is over now, and it is entirely legal to import CBD in France.

France is among the largest grower of hemp in the EU. However, it has been reluctant to allow widespread imports of CBD products into its local markets. It has also been hesitant in legalizing the free sales of CBD through retail chains.

France is indeed a part of the EU, and for all member states, EU rules hold a higher value than local laws. However, that is in theory. In practice, there is lots of difference in how EU rules are implemented in various nations.

Many people have earlier got into trouble for importing CBD products into France. Thus, it is vital to understand the history of those events for those looking to import CBD into France.

Since the legalization of CBD in the EU, many started to import. However, one unfortunate incident occurred in 2019, when an organization was fined for importing CBD into France. The organization and its owners got hefty fines for importing CBD into the nation, even though they imported CBD legally produced in other EU states.

Thus, the organization filed a case in EU court and got a ruling in their favour in May 2020. The EU court ruled that the French government cannot ban the import of CBD or consider it illegal if it was legally produced in other EU nations.

French Supreme Court opens the market for importers but

However, things did not end here. French authorities continued to harass the retailers. If retailers could not sell CBD products freely, importing them would not make any commercial sense. Fortunately, that has also finally changed. In June 2021, the Criminal Section of the French Supreme Court (Cour de cassation, Chambre Criminelle) eventually ruled that import, sales, and possessing of CBD are legal in France if such products were produced legally in other member states.

But there are still some uncertainties. Many people noted that the ruling specifically mentioned the legality of cannabis extract from fibre and seeds. However, cannabis fibre and seeds do not contain CBD. It means that there are still some unclarities that remain.

Overview of French CBD Regulations and Laws

The EU ruling that France should not ban CBD products or the French Supreme Court’s decision makes things a bit clearer. However, not entirely. Further, things are made complicated by other rules and regulations.

It would be safe to say that importing hemp seed oil, seeds, hemp fibre, hemp seed flour, and defatted hemp seeds into France is entirely legal. This would not require any legal permissions except certificates proving the quality of the products. One may also need to prove that hemp seed and its products were derived from hemp varieties or cultivars that are legal to grow in the EU zone.

However, when it comes to CBD, it seems that things are clear and yet not. It appears that France has accepted the EU laws, but with some limitations. Therefore, it is too early to say if importing CBD oil into France would not cause trouble. However, it is entirely possible that products with EU wide approval of novel food products may be imported legally into France.

Nevertheless, one cannot import raw hemp plant products like its buds or leaves into France.

Additionally, it is worth noticing that some CBD products might be banned due to other reasons like health concerns specific to that nation. It means that EU law allows individual countries to decide on some issues. Thus, France may still ban CBD imports by stating that it is bad for the health of their people. In Frances, ANSES runs the so-called nutrivigilance, collecting safety data of food products.

Requirements for Importing CBD into France

When importing CBD products into France, always make sure that the THC level is below 0.2%. It is even better to import only THC free products. Quite often, controlling agencies would use rapid reagent tests to see if it contains THC or not. If the test comes positive, they will send the samples for further lab tests to quantify the amount of THC in a CBD product.

Secondly, it is worth understanding that any CBD plant parts, like flower, stem, or leaves, should never be imported into France. Import of plant parts is still illegal.

However, hemp seed, hemp fibre, hemp seed flour, or other products derived from hemp fibre or seeds are completely legal to import and have almost minimal requirements.

For CBD products, one would need to provide a certificate stating that the product has been registered by the office of the European Commission as a Novel Food. Additionally, it would be a good idea to enclose a certificate of origin along with the shipment. Finally, certification of analysis is also a must, as it will serve as evidence that the product has THC within the permitted limits and does not contain other harmful impurities.

Needless to say, that importing person should have a registered legal entity. In France, it is essential to register with the Chambre de Commerce (RCS), to engage in any import or export activity. Further, EORI (Economic Operator Registration and Identification) registration or number is a must for import and export.

Importing CBD into France within the EU

It is pretty straightforward. One would still need novel food registration or approval from the EU. It is generally done online by submitting an application to the E-submission Food Chain Platform. This approval is received by the manufacturer and not by the importer. However, the importer needs to provide its copy as proof of approval when clearing goods from customs. Additionally, customs would ask for certification of origin and certificate of analysis.

In the case of taxation, it is much simpler than importing from outside. As a rule, there are no customs duties on goods imported from another EU member state. However, it is a bit more complex with VAT. In that case, it is good if the exporter pays VAT. However, the exporter must have a VAT number that is visible in the EU VIES system. It is a unique VAT number that is valid throughout the EU. Hence, the exporter pays the VAT and adds it to the invoice. Thus, the importer would be paying the cost of the goods along with VAT to the exporter.

Importing CBD into France to Sell from non-EU state

It is far more complex, both from a regulatory point of view and duties. To begin with, one needs to get a novel food approval for the product. It is done by the European Commission and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). It is generally the first step.

Additionally, the exporter needs to provide some other documents regarding the biosafety of the shipment. For example, there is a need for a certificate of analysis and certificate of origin. Additional documents needed are the packing list and invoice.

When some business imports goods from outside the EU, both the VAT and customs are applicable. Thus, one would need to know about the so-called HS code or customs code for the product, as this number should be mentioned on the invoice. HS code decides how much duty should an importer pay on goods. Additionally, the importer would need to pay VAT.

For goods coming from certain countries, France may ask for local lab certification of goods. The local lab would test for active ingredients, additives, impurities, microbiological safety. This certificate may be especially needed when distributing the product.

Importing Hemp into France

Imported hemp could be pretty simple to completely illegal in France. Importing hemp flowers, leaves or stems are unallowed. On the other hand, hemp seeds, hemp seed flour, hemp fibre, and other products made of hemp seed or fibre are legal and do not need any regulatory clearances.

It is vital to understand that CBD and hemp seed or fibre products are very different things, although both might come from the same plant. Hemp seed or its fibre products are naturally CBD and THC free. Thus, hemp seed flour may qualify as just any other food item. On the other hand, hemp fibre of its products might be eligible as industrial goods. Nevertheless, most of the products can be imported with minimal documentation. Nonetheless, one would still need to know about the HS code, and customs duty and VAT are applicable to these products.

To conclude, CBD in France is legal. However, the importation of CBD in France is not simple. France does follow EU hemp regulation. Therefore, doing business is relatively simpler for European CBD companies. Nonetheless, even EU companies might sometimes get into trouble. However, things are changing fast, and it is always a good idea to consult a customs agent or broker before importing any CBD product in France.

2023 update:

Importing CBD into France is subject to specific regulations as a novel food.1 CBD-infused products must undergo stringent evaluations and gain approval from the European Food Safety Authority before legal marketing in France.2 These regulations, including strict THC limits, have remained unchanged in recent years. Complying with these requirements is crucial for importers to ensure legal compliance and avoid potential issues. As the CBD industry continues to grow, businesses must stay updated on France’s evolving regulations to successfully import and sell CBD products in the country.3

Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA) Overview, Uses & Benefits

For the most time in human history, hemp has played an important role, providing food, medications, and was used in various industries. It is the hemp fiber and fabric made from it that made the discovery of many continents possible. It seems that now people are discovering new uses of hemp extract with the help of science.

Studies show that hemp extract is rich in various cannabinoids. However, cannabidiol (CBD) has till now received the most attention. But things are changing fast. Studies show that various cannabinoids have different mechanisms of action. Therefore, there is a need to know more about each cannabinoid.

Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA) is a precursor of CBD and is present in large amounts in hemp. Decarboxylation of CBDA through heat and storage results in its conversion to CBD. Currently, the industry is converting most CBDA to CBD via decarboxylation by applying heat to cannabis extract. However, some researchers think that it may be good to preserve this acidic compound.

What is CBDA?

Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA) is a precursor of CBD, but it has many unique properties. Unlike CBD, it is acidic. On applying heat to CBDA or prolonged storage of cannabis plants, it may get converted to better known CBD. CBDA is abundant in various parts of the plant that are generally rejected.

It means that CBDA can be pretty economical to extract. Moreover, researchers think they have been mistaken to view it just as a precursor to CBD, something that must be converted to CBD. Studies into the unique properties of CBDA only started a few decades back. New experiments show that it has quite different properties when compared to CBD. Thus, it may be used alone or along with CBD for more significant health benefits.

CBDA vs CBD and CBG

These compounds are all closely related and are just other compounds found in the cannabis plant. But what sets them apart?

CBDA and CBD are both non-psychotropic cannabinoids meaning they won’t produce a high associated with THC. Even though they have similar traits, it has been found that the human body can absorb more of the CBDA, meaning it is more effective in smaller doses than CBD.

CBDA is actually the most raw form of CBD, working in a very different way and interacting with COX-2 enzyme rather than with CB1 or CB2 receptors as CBD does.

CBG is often described as the mother of all cannabinoids whereas CBDA is the raw form of CBD. This means that CBDA transform into CBD when exposed to heat, while CBG is present in many cannabis strains but in smaller doses. What they have in common are the many health benefits that are present with both.

Health benefits of CBDA

Cbda can be beneficial in many ways and as the research continues, the list of benefits just keeps growing. Let’s have a look at some of them

  1. Supports Cardiovascular Health

More and more data supports the claims that the chemical compounds found in hemp and the cannabis sativa plant, including CBDA, can be effective against cardiovascular issues. This includes heart attack, atherosclerosis, arrhythmias, hypertension, and metabolic disorders. This positive effect comes from blocking CB1 receptors.According to one study, it may even be effective with diabetic patients, helping them manage many of the complications that come with the disease.

  1. Regulates Metabolism

The benefits seen from this are largely in CBGA helping stimulate lipid metabolism, which reduced excess lipid accumulation. However, more research is needed on this topic.

  1. Anti-Anxiety and Depression Properties

It has already been that non-acidic CBD presents as a potential treatment for both depression and anxiety. But recent developments show that there is reason for excitement around cannabidiolic acid as well. In fact, researchers have seen that CBDA not only affects the same receptors as CBD which are the receptors that control feelings of anxiety and well-being, but that it is effective as an antidepressant at doses 10 to 100 times less than the dosage size required of CBD.

  1. Prevents Seizures

As of now there is only one FDA-approved CBD medication is an anti-seizure drug, which is used when treating drug-resistant epilepsy. The company has since tested the efficacy of cannabidiolic acid against that of CBD in seizure prevention. The results pointed to CBDA as being even faster-acting and more effective than CBD. This may mean a chance for a great reduction in any possible side effects.

  1. Boasts Anti Inflammatory Properties

Since chronic inflammation is highly influenced by the Cox 2 enzyme, CBDA has proven itself as a powerful anti-inflammatory substance because of its characteristics as a selective Cox 2 inhibitor. This means it works in a very similar way as aspirin or ibuprofen but without the long-term side effects.

  1. Effective Anti-Nausea Agent

As research shows, CBDA can be greatly effective against nausea caused either by toxins or motion sensitivity. It has even proved effective against anticipatory nausea many experience before receiving chemotherapy and since no other medication has been effective in this, CBDA is a particularly interesting option. In addition, the doses needed to achieve anti-nausea effects are much smaller when compared to doses of CBD to reach the same goal.

  1. Potential Cancer Treatment

Researchers of an early study found that CBDA could potentially suppress the spread of a specific type of breast cancer cells. Meaning that, in theory, a therapy that can stop cells from metastasizing could also stop the disease from spreading.

  1. Potentially Effective Against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)

In recent years, researchers started to think about what effects CBDA could have on SARS-CoV-2. They found that both CBD and CBDA have some potential to combat the infection. Both seem to block a critical step in the process of infection.

What does CBDA do to the Human Body?

Studies show that, unlike CBD that primarily works by influencing endocannabinoid receptors, CBDA has a different mode of action. As a result, it may help reduce the production of some of the early inflammation markers like IL-2, INF-gamma, and many more.

It also might reduce the activity of the COX-2 enzyme. This particular enzyme plays a vital role in inflammation and pain induction in humans. Further, CBDA influences TRP-type receptors that have a crucial role in pain mediation.

Interestingly enough, in experimental studies in mice, researchers found that it may even stimulate serotonin receptors in the brain. This may have various effects on the brain. For example, it may have a role in reducing nausea. Thus, such stimulation of serotonin receptors may play a role in preventing substance addiction. However, it is still not clear if this mechanism can help fight mood or emotional disorders.

Researchers are also focusing on the CBDA actions like its ability to help in seizures or suppress the growth of cancer cells, and much more.

It is worth understanding that these are still very early findings, nonetheless, highly encouraging findings. There is still a need for more studies and to carry out clinical trials in humans. Nevertheless, these early findings provide hope that we may see the emergence of more cannabis-based therapies in the future. It also highlights that there is still a lot to understand about cannabis extract and how various cannabinoids work together, resulting in the entourage effect.

Potential Benefits of CBDA

Figure 1 health benefits of CBDA (Image source: Formato M, Crescente G, Scognamiglio M, et al. (‒)-Cannabidiolic Acid, a Still Overlooked Bioactive Compound: An Introductory Review and Preliminary Research. Molecules. 2020;25(11):2638.)

Studies show that CBDA may help in many ways. It appears to help suppress inflammation. Thus, it may have a use in local inflammatory conditions like joint pains. There is still a need to understand if it can help prevent low-grade inflammation and reduce the risk of various chronic disorders.

Some of the pathways that are involved in inflammation are also responsible for causing pain. CBDA may be suitable for suppressing pain related to inflammation. It may also work for non-inflammatory pains like those caused by neuropathies in diabetes or pains associated with cancer.

Cannabidiol acid may stimulate serotonin receptors in certain parts of the brain. It may explain its potent anti-emetic properties. CBD acid may also help keep calm, improve mood, and enhance sleep quality. There is a need to understand if it can help in more severe conditions like anxiety disorder or depression.

CBDA may help prevent convulsions. There are already cannabis drugs approved for use in certain epileptic conditions. Therefore, it is entirely possible that CBDA may also help in many such conditions.

Although it also exerts anti-cancer activity, it is unclear if it can help prevent or treat cancer. Nonetheless, experimental studies show that it may have certain benefits.

Current Medical Research

The most recent medical research focuses mainly on its potential prevention of Covid-19. A team of researchers of the University of Chicago published a study in early 2022 that contains evidence that CBD can reduce the infection in humans. They found a reduced number of positive tests with patients that were taking the FDA-approved drug for treating epilepsy. More clinical trials should be done to determine whether CBD could be used as a viable way to prevent or to treat early cases of Covid-19.

Manufacturing CBDA Products

CBDA might be isolated from cannabis. However, most methods used to separate it from other cannabinoids are experimental. Thus, at present, it would be difficult to isolate it with the use of conventional extraction methods used by the cannabis industry, like hydrocarbon or CO2 extraction.

Nonetheless, isolating pure CBDA is possible. It may be achieved with the use of well-known methods called chromatographic techniques. It is regarded relatively inexpensive and straightforward way of isolating the compound. Moreover, this method helps get relatively high purity CBDA.

Further, it is worth noticing that decarboxylation is a frequently used strategy in CBD extraction. This helps convert acidic CBDA to neutral CBD. Thus, those looking to preserve CBDA in whole cannabis extract should avoid decarboxylation.

At present, the best way to create products with CBDA is to use broad-spectrum distillates, as they contain it in smaller amounts. Or even better, extract the cannabinoid using supercritical CO2 without decarboxylation of the plant material.

To conclude, CBDA is a poorly understood compound to date. However, it is one of the most abundant compounds in cannabis. Therefore, there is a real need to explore this molecule, understanding its health benefits better. Moreover, studies show that it is also present in hemp plant parts that are generally rejected as waste products. But, regretfully, CBDA remains a largely unknown cannabinoid due to the greater popularity of CBD.
